Meet Benson! This handsome boy is about 3.5 years old and 70 lbs of love! Benson loves nothing more than to feel safe and snuggle on the couch or lounge around with his humans. He is very sweet and gives a lot of love! Benson is great with humans (kids 10+ ok too) and loves to meet new people. He’s very smart and quick to learn new tricks like high five, paw, stay, sit and lay. He’s also crate and potty trained! Benson was not properly trained or introduced to other animals early on in his life, so he has a high prey drive. We are working with a trainer in Eugene, OR who is helping him appropriately react to other animals. However, due to his reactivity, he will need a home where he is the only pet and has a very secure (6ft +) and solid fenced yard (no chain link or other see through fences). Benson has learned a communication system built on rewards and positive verbal markers. This system can be used to continue to develop and nurture his self confidence. Much of his dog reactivity is rooted in a lack of feeling safe. To thrive he will need a strong leader to advocate for him, manage his occasional outbursts of leash reactivity (towards cats/dogs) and to protect him from harm. His ideal match is someone mentally alert enough and physically strong enough to correct and redirect him when he fails to control his impulses. He enjoys affection and praise which can be used as a form of reward. Due to Benson’s strength and size, a muzzle should always be worn when out in public. He does have mild separation anxiety and is more comfortable when his human is with him. He is crate trained which can be used at times when he must be left alone. He has shown no signs of human aggression or resource guarding but he seems to have had previous success grabbing the leash away from his handler when overstimulated or frustrated. Another reason a muzzle is ideal for leash walking or being on leash in public. Benson needs a family or best friend who can manage his size and strength, and is ok with him staying at home or playing in the yard (and being managed appropriately). He is not for someone looking for a running or walking partner, or someone that wants to take their dog out to the breweries. He is a sweet human bonded dog that wants to be by your side at home, and will reward you with lots of snuggles and kisses. Benson’s trainer has graciously offered to help any potential adopter with transitioning Benson into his new home and provide support. Benson has had a tremendously difficult life but he is ready to find love and support in a family who loves him. Benson was rescued from a shelter in Los Angeles, CA and is being fostered in Eugene, OR. Will you be his hero?
