So you’ve communicated with a dog’s current family, and you’re excited to meet your possible new best Fido friend. It’s time to schedule a meet and greet with the dog and his family. Here are some Do’s and Don’ts for meet and greet success.
DO
- Plan for at least one hour together ideally in a neutral, outside setting in public. A quiet park environment works great, enclosed if possible.
- Take the whole family along, if possible – and especially include any other family dogs.
- Make introductions slowly with other family animals.
- Take it all easy, and don’t rush the meeting.
- Be prepared to leave without Fido if you’re not “feeling it” for whatever reason.
- Be sure to read up on good advice for introducing new dogs. Learn more at: Introducing Dogs (Best Friends)
- If long distance, meet half way and be sure to have good communication and clear expectations beforehand.
DON’T
- Don’t meet up at a dog park – there’s too much commotion and will get in the way of meeting success.
- Don’t rush into anything – don’t be afraid to think on things overnight if you need this time to get comfortable with the fit for your fido friend
